Why You Should Use Boat Wax
Boat wax can help you extend the life of your gelcoat. Gelcoat is the outer layer over the fiberglass of the boat. What it does is protect the hull of the boat, while providing a glossy shine. It is also what gives the boat its color. The problem is, over time your gelcoat takes a beating. It can become dull and chalky. Thankfully with a good washing and some boat wax this problem can usually be remedied.
There are a lot of similarities between exterior car care and boat care. One of these is that before you wax a boat or car you need to wash it. Wax is, after all, meant to protect the finish and no one wants to maintain and protect dirt and grime. Use a cleaner that is designed for use on boats. These special cleaners can remove the oxidation and water spots that inevitably build up on a boat's hull.
You should always use a soft towel or rag to wipe down the surface. You don't want to use abrasive materials that could leave scratches. Once you have made sure that the surface is both clean and clear of grease, it is time to apply the boat wax.
Using boat wax regularly can help prolong the life of your gelcoat. But don't wait for the gelcoat to begin to get dull and faded. Instead, use it before a problem starts. Boat wax provides the protective layer your gelcoat needs. Boat waxes are easy to apply, and while most of them are applied in similar manners, you should always follow the instructions on the bottle to ensure proper use.
