ABS Disc Brakes - Rear-Brakes Servicing
These steps are general guidelines that are applicable to most vehicles. With any particular vehicle, there may be procedures, specifications, settings, tolerances, components, etc. that are specific to that vehicle. There are also variations according to the type and brand of repair kit you select. Always consult your vehicle's service manual when undertaking significant automotive repairs, and read and follow the manufacturer's directions and Note that come with your kit or replacement parts.
- Rear Brakes Servicing
- Clean the hub using a wire brush and clean off any debris on the backing plate.
- Install the resurfaced rotor. It's advisable to apply a little thread sealer to the pins to prevent them from backing out under vibration.
- Recall that the rear caliper is attached to the emergency brake as well as the standard braking system. Depressing the piston on the rear caliper is a different procedure from on the front. It must be rotated and depressed simultaneously. A specialized tool -- the caliper piston tool -- is made specifically for that purpose. This is a cube-shaped adapter that fits on a standard socket. Each face of the cube has a different pin configuration. Which face is used depends on the specific application. For the vehicle in our demonstration, the face with four pins is the one that was used. The tool is attached to a standard ratchet.
- Before depressing the piston, attach the bleeder kit, and open the bleeder valve. Also, apply some brake grease to the dust-seal of the caliper to twisting the seal while turning the piston.
- Using the piston tool attached to the ratchet, rotate and push until the piston is fully depressed.
- Tighten the bleeder valve, remove the bleeder kit, and place the cap back on.
- To install the pads, a pad-retainer clip is installed into a groove in the piston to hold the pad in position.
- The inboard pad has two locating pins that also help ensure that the pad is positioned correctly with respect to the piston.
- Install the clip, position the inboard pad, and snap it into place.
- Making sure that the wear sensor is oriented on the trailing edge in relation to the vehicle, and snap it into place in the caliper.
- Secure the caliper, and tighten the emergency-brake cable.
- Before driving the vehicle, test the o brakes by having an assistant step on the brake pedal and check each brake for proper operation. Also have them apply the emergency brake, and check its operation.
- Replace the wheels and tires to complete the job.
