Automatic Transmission consists of mechanical systemhydraulic system, electrical system and computer control all working together in harmony. If something goes wrong in the transmission system then we need to probe where exactly is the problem occurring. Automatic Transmission is the most complicated mechanical system in the automobile. In general Transmission components give you an idea how a transmission system works. It is suggested that before a minor problem becomes a major, it is necessary to take preventive measures so that minor problem doesn't turn out to be major in course of time.
What is Transmission:
Transmission repairs includes from minor adjustments to complete overhauls. Transmission is a device placed at the back of the engine and it helps to send the power from the engine to the wheels. Transmission device helps the engine to maintain a particular RPM and maintain the speed by providing power to the wheels. Power flows in the following system from engine to the torque converter through the transmission and drive shaft where it splits and is sent to the two rear wheels.
In the same way as the above diagram, the power flows from the engine through the torque converter to a large chain that sends the power through a 180degree turn to the transmission that is along the side of the engine.
Transmission Components:
Transmission components include Planetary gear sets, Hydraullic system, Cluches, Bands, Seals and gaskets, Torque Converter, Governor, Modulator, Trottle cables, Computer etc.
We must try to find the faults before they get worse :
Watch for oil leaks and stains under the car:
If there is regular red oil leak from your car then check from where exactly the oil is leaking, check whether it is leaking from the power steering system. Also check the level of the fluid in transmission system. If the level of the fluid is less that than the minimum then serious transmission damage can take place. So, be careful about the fluid level in the transmission system.
Check the fluid color and odour:
If the color of the fluid is cloudy or muddy and the odour is burned out, then we need to refill the transmission fluid.
A modern transmission system should work smoothly without any vibration, noise etc. If it is not working smoothly then we need to check and ask the technician to repair before going for costly overhauls or remakes.
Maintenance:
Transmission fluid should be changed regularly. Most of the transmission experts advise to change the fluid and filter after every 25, 000 Kms. Some transmission systems have drain plugs to drain the fluid. Once the oil is drained from the drain plug in the oil pan, the technician checks for metal shavings and other debris, which are indicators of transmission problems. After that, refilling of the fluid is takes place.
