Quick Tip Replacing a Taillight
Need to replace a taillight bulb? Then just follow these simple steps from automotive expert Trisha Hessinger.
- Accessing taillight bulbs is easy. First, look at your vehicle to determine whether you'll need to unscrew the outside lens to reach the bulb or if you'll need to access it from inside the trunk. (If you've looked at the lights and still aren't sure whether access is exterior or interior, consult the owner's manual for your vehicle.)
- After removing the outside lens or inside plastic cover, you can take out the bulb by simply twisting then gently pulling the socket from its outlet (the bulb is attached to the end of the socket).
- Now carefully remove the bulb from the socket and replace it with the new one. Replacement bulbs are available in automotive-parts stores; be sure to select the right type to fit the make and model of your vehicle.
- Once the bulb is in the socket, reinsert the socket back into the outlet and replace the outer lens or interior plastic cover. Finally, have someone stand behind the vehicle as you tap the brake pedal to make sure the bulb is working.
Important Note:
If your vehicle uses halogen bulbs, wear gloves to avoid touching the bulbs with your fingers.
