Replacing Car Mirrors

This is actually a fairly simple process to replace a rearview mirror

  • steps :

    1. The first thing you'll need to do is mark the exact point where the new mirror will be positioned. If there's still some adhesive from the old mirror, it will be easy to see exactly where the new one will need to be attached. Mark this point either with tape or a grease pencil on the outside of the windshield.

    2. Once you've marked the anchor point for the new mirror, you're ready to remove any remaining adhesive on the inside of the windshield. Purchase some adhesive remover from your automotive-supply shop and apply a small amount to a clean cloth. Rub the cloth over the area a few times to give the traces of adhesive a chance to soften.

    3. Next you'll need to scrap the area -- very carefully -- with a single-edge razor. Always use caution when working with a razor, and take care to avoid scratching your windshield.

    4. Once you've scraped away the fragments of adhesive, apply a bit of denatured alcohol to a cloth and rub this over the surface to ensure that it's entirely free of any residual adhesive or other film.

    5. After applying the alcohol, allow the area plenty of time to dry before positioning the button anchor for the mirror on the windshield. Applying the adhesive to the area too soon is a common mistake that causes the mirror to become unstuck shortly after it's reattached.

    6. Another important step is applying a primer to the button. Simply squeeze open the tube -- this will moisten the application tip -- then rub the tip over the surface of the button and set it aside. Since the primer needs to sit for several minutes, don't apply the adheisve immediately after you put on the primer.
