Reinstallation of the Transmission
|
- Once the engine has been professionally rebuilt and then reassembled, the transmission assembly can be re-installed.
- Once the transmission was removed from the engine, it was disassembled and carefully examined for broken gears and for general condition. On our project car, the transmission was found to be in relatively good condition.
- To ensure continued performance, the transmission was reconditioned slightly with replacement of bearings, synchronizer rings, gaskets and seals. Currently, replacement parts are still available for the Alfa transmission. As this model gets older, those parts may become more difficult to procure.
- Before installing the transmission, the input shaft is sprayed with some yellow grease to help it insert into the pilot bushing more easily.
- The transmission bell-housing is carefully placed and worked into position where it marries to the engine block.
- Once fitted onto the dowels, the transmission is bolted onto the engine using nuts, bolts and washers. The washers help prevent damage to the aluminum housing.
- The bolts are then tightened down to secure the transmission onto its mount.
